Grubbs scores game-high 26

Alison Grubbs led the Foresters with 26 points and 6 steals against Grinnell.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College women's basketball team began defense of its Midwest Conference Championship Saturday (December 2nd) with a 77-35 victory at home over Grinnell College. It was the conference-opener for both teams.

After trailing 4-2 after six full minutes of play, senior Karla Gribble (Mineral Point, WI/Mineral Point) nailed a 3-pointer that started an 18-2 run for Lake Forest. 20 Grinnell turnovers helped make up for the Foresters shooting just 34.1% in the first half and enabled the home team to open up a 42-17 halftime lead.

The second half was much of the same as the Foresters outscored Grinnell 35-18. Thirteen different Foresters played at least five minutes after halftime with eight of them scoring points during that time. Overall, twelve Foresters scored in the game and all sixteen played at least seven minutes.

While the Foresters shot just under 40% for the game from the field, they allowed
Grinnell to make just 14 of 62 field goal attempts (22.6%) and forced them into 33 turnovers. It was the second consecutive impressive showing for Lake Forest's team defense. Concordia University (River Forest, IL) shot just 12 of 63 from the field (19.0%) and turned the ball over 39 times against the Foresters on Wednesday (November 29th).

Senior guard Alison Grubbs (Cullom, IL/Tri-Point) was the team's leading scorer for the fourth time in six games. She scored a game-high 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, 4-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Grubbs also had 3 assists, 4 rebounds and 6 of the Foresters' 20 steals.

Two other Foresters scored in double-figures as sophomore forward Katie McCants (Menasha, WI/Menasha) and senior forward Kim Magee (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego) chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively. McCants made six of the eight shots she attempted on Saturday and is now shooting 55.1% (38 of 69) from the floor in 2000-01.

The Foresters are now 3-3 overall on the season and 1-0 in the Midwest Conference. They will play their final game of the fall semester, a non-conference match-up, on Saturday (December 9th) at Illinois Wesleyan University at 2:00 PM.
