News & Notes Contact: Scott Rucker, SID In the tournament's opening contest, the Lake Forest disposed of Worcester Polytechnic Institute 66-41. The Foresters doubled-up WPI by halftime (40-20) and used a stingy defense to secure the victory. The Foresters limited WPI to fewer than 31% shooting for the game. Junior Alison Grubbs (Cullom, IL/Tri-Point High School) hit 7 of 13 field goals and 3 of 5 from beyond the three-point arc for 17 points. She also added 4 assists and 5 steals. The entire 15-member team saw action and 11 Foresters scored. The win earned Lake Forest a shot at University of Scranton, the ninth-ranked team in the nation according to Division III Basketball Online and the eventual tournament champion. Lake Forest raced out to a 41-39 halftime lead, but then went cold from the field. The team connected on just 5 of 30 of their second half field goals. Grubbs had 24 points and 4 steals, while senior Addi Murphy (Chillicothe, IL/Illinois Valley Central H.S.) added 14 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. Lake Forest committed 26 turnovers, compared to 15 for Scranton. The Foresters bounced back in the third place game by holding off University of Puget Sound, 61-56. Lake Forest owned a 32-20 lead at the midway point and then held off a Puget Sound comeback attempt in the second half. Grubbs again led the team in scoring with 20 points. Freshman Katie McCants (Menasha, WI/Menasha H.S.) canned 5 of 6 field goals and 2 of 2 from the free throw line for 12 points. The Foresters out-rebounded UPS 50-34, including a 19-8 advantage on the offensive glass. At the conclusion of the tournament, Grubbs was named to the six-member All-Tournament Team. She led all tourney participants in scoring. |
