LAKE FOREST, IL - In a game that featured 14 ties, 13 lead changes and 5 points by one player in the final seven seconds, the Lake Forest College women's basketball team defeated St. Norbert College 66-63 Friday (February 23rd) evening in their Midwest Conference Championship Tournament semi-final game. The Foresters will play Carroll College in the title game on Saturday (February 24th) at 2:00 PM.

Sophomore forward Katie McCants (Menasha, WI/Menasha) led all scorers with 22 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field. McCants also pulled down 8 rebounds, including one following a Kim Magee (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego) blocked shot that gave the Foresters possession (down 2 points) with 18 seconds remaining. Magee also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Next on the team in scoring was Alison Grubbs (Cullom, IL/Tri-Point), who scored 10 points and added 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 steals. With just seven seconds remaining in the game and her team trailing by two points, the senior guard was fouled and had two free throws with the Foresters' season and her own career hanging in the balance. Not only did the 84.2% free throw shooter nail them both, but after St. Norbert turned the ball over with five seconds to go, she scored and was fouled again with 2 seconds remaining. After completing the conventional three-point play, she sealed the win by stealing the inbound pass and holding the ball as time expired.

Neither team shot well from the field, with Lake Forest holding a slight edge 38.1% to 35.8%. The teams combined to make just 5 of 30 three-point attempts and each team shot 20 free throws, with the Foresters making 16 and St. Norbert 12. St. Norbert pulled down a few more rebounds (47-42) and Lake Forest had 12 steals to St. Norbert's 9.

St. Norbert was ahead by four points early in the game before being outscored by Lake Forest 22-9 over a span of nearly eight minutes. The Green Knights responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead by a point, which was also their halftime lead (33-32). The second half was close throughout. Lake Forest led by as many as five points and St. Norbert once had a four-point advantage. The lead changed hands nine times and the score was tied on eight occasions after intermission. A St. Norbert field goal with just over a minute to play broke one of those ties and they got the ball back with 42 seconds left and still ahead by two. Magee's blocked shot recovered by McCants with less than 20 seconds left set up the heroics by Grubbs.

Carroll College reached the final with a 70-54 victory over Ripon College in the earlier semi-final game. Four players scored in double-figures for the Pioneers, who raised their record to 17-6 on the season. The 19-4 Foresters defeated Carroll 82-61 in the teams' only previous meeting this season behind a career-high 39 points from Grubbs.
