Stevenson Becomes Program’s All-Time Leading Scorer in Weekend Split
Foresters qualify for four-team MWC Tournament

Melissa Stevenson has scored more goals than any other player in team history.
MONMOUTH, IL- The Lake Forest College women’s soccer team split a pair of Midwest Conference road matches over the weekend (October 15-16). The Foresters won 8-0 at Illinois College on Saturday and fell 2-0 at Monmouth College on Sunday. The team is now 8-4-2 overall this season and 5-1-2 in league play as it clinched a spot in the four-team MWC Tournament. The loss dropped Illinois College to 2-10-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the conference. Monmouth is 9-5-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the league.

After a scoreless opening period on Saturday, the Foresters exploded for eight goals in less than 35 minutes during the second half. Freshman Katie Rice (Centennial, CO/Eaglecrest) scored the first at 46:38 and the fourth, her eighth of the season, at 59:49. Freshman Mallory Davis (Whitefish Bay, WI/Whitefish Bay) assisted Rice’s first tally and junior Becca Bride (Wilmot, NH/Kearsarge Regional) helped on the second. Rice assisted senior Melissa Stevenson (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) at 56:47 and Stevenson scored again just 42 seconds later off assists by freshmen Grace Dunford (Los Altos, CA/Homestead) and Jayme Honold (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei). Honold scored the fifth goal of the contest at 65:35 and Stevenson completed her fifth career hat trick at 67:34, again off assists from Dunford and Honold. Davis converted a penalty kick for her second goal of the year at 70:59 and sophomore Krista Kusinski (New London, NH/Kimball Union Academy) accounted for the final tally at 81:30. Classmate Marly Ashworth (Acworth, NH/Fall Mountain Regional) earned the assist on Kusinski’s first goal of the season.

With three goals in the game, Stevenson moved past Nicole Tarrandy Whalen ’91 into first place in school history with 54 goals and 142 points in her career. She still trails Whalen on the all-time list for assists by three. Stevenson leads the 2005 squad with 14 goals, six assists, and 34 points.

Lake Forest out-shot the Lady Blues 30-4 in the contest. Freshman goalkeeper Alison Lynch (Dunlap, IL/Peoria Notre Dame) needed just one save to record her third shutout of the season. She is now 4-0-0 with a 0.65 goals against average.

Sunday’s first half was also scoreless. Monmouth scored the contest’s first goal on a penalty kick at 74:52 and then added an insurance tally at 81:18. The Fighting Scots out-shot the Foresters 23-14. Lake Forest junior goalkeeper Krystine Operzedek (Deerfield, IL/Deerfield) recorded eight saves.

The Foresters will play their final league game Wednesday (October 19) night at Carroll College. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m. Lake Forest will complete its regular season schedule at home next Sunday (October 23) against UW-Whitewater at 3:00 p.m.
