LF CLAIM SCHOOL'S FIRST TEAM TITLE; THREE INDIVIDUAL TITLES
The Lake Forest women's tennis capped off a storybook season with the school's first conference team championship on Friday (Oct. 15) at the Midwest Conference Team Championships in Rock Island, IL. After knocking off Carroll, 5-2, in the semifinals, the Foresters avenged their only conference loss of the season by beating Beloit, 5-3, in the finals. Play was ended in both matches after Lake Forest secured the victory with their fifth team point. Lake Forest ended the 1999 season with a 14-3 team record in dual match play. The 14 wins are the most in school history.
On Saturday (Oct. 16), at the MWC Doubles Championships in Madison, WI, freshman Angie Kral (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield Central H.S.) teamed with senior Elizabeth King (Marengo, IL/Marengo Community H.S.) at No. 3 doubles to claim Lake Forest's first individual conference title of the weekend. The duo, playing as the number one seed, defeated Jaclyn Sturman and Desiree Villarreal of Carroll, 6-3, 6-3, in the championship match and lost just one game in their quarterfinal and semifinal matches combined. In the No. 1 doubles tournament, Shelby Surfas (Malibu, CA/Viewpoint H.S.) and Kendra Reilly (Oyster Bay, NY/Coldspring Harbor H.S.) won the consolation title after dropping their first match of the tournament in three sets (7-6, 1-6, 2-6). Shannon Sobieski (Fox Point, WI/Nicolet H.S.) and Jamie Irons (Neenah, WI/Neenah H.S.), at the No. 2 doubles, followed a similar route. They won their first match before falling in the semifinals, also in the maximum number of sets (6-4, 4-6, 2-6).
During Sunday's singles tournaments, Kral and Irons claimed conference titles at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Irons survived a scare in the first round, in which she outlasted her Grinnell opponent, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1, before losing just three games in her final two matches. Kral won three consecutive straight set matches to lay claim to her second conference title in two days. Kral did not drop a set at either the singles or doubles individual tournaments. Both Kral and Irons played from the top seed of their respective brackets.
Two other Foresters reached the finals of their brackets in singles play. Both Sobieski and freshman Jackie Pieczkiewicz (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake Community) lost in the finals as the number two seed. Sobieski fell, 6-3, 6-0, in her last match, while Pieczkiewicz lost in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-7) in the finals. Surfas, after losing her first match in three sets, came back to win the consolation championship from her No. 1 singles position, while Reilly lost in the semifinals of the No. 3 tournament.
