Pictured artifact:
At the start of WWI German field helmets were made of lacquered leather or other materials. But the nature of warfare had changed with this war. Tanks, machine guns, aircraft, improved grenades and close-order combat had become common. With helmets made of light materials the injury rate took a toll on soldiers. This new helmet, introduced in 1916, while not able to stop a bullet, could reduce injury from flying shrapnel, rock kicked up by exploding ordinance, and falling objects.
