Apparatus

The electron excitation occurs in a stainless steel vacuum chamber. A diffusion pump continuously pumps the target gas from the chamber to remove dissociated NO and other contaminats. The contaminants (such as NO2) condense in the cold trap. The manometer measures the pressure in the reservoir above the capillary tubes. The Faraday cup collects the electrons so that we can measure the total electron beam current.

The emitted light is collected and sent into a monochromator and detected by a photomultiplier tube (PMT).
