Fractured Court, Monumental Decision:
Earl Warren's Unifying Role in Brown

ideally enables the desegregation of public schools across the country.
Many black children were still unable to attend white schools even after the 
Supreme Court's ruling based on the effects of Brown II, which handed authority
down to local school officials.  In the South, desegregation was met with fierce opposition.

Then-Governor of California Earl Warren with Dwight D. Eisenhower 
and Richard M. Nixon in 1952.  Warren and Eisenhower met for the 
first time during this year at the Republican National Convention.  Eisenhower appointed 
Warren to the high Court in late 1953, after the death of Chief Justice Fred Vinson.
