FORESTER DEFENSE SHUTS THE DOOR ON IC
The Lake Forest College defense was definitely not bad in the first half on Saturday at Illinois College - allowing 173 yards of offense and just 7 points - but it was absolutely spectacular in the second half, limiting IC to negative 6 yards of offense. On the afternoon, Lake Forest recorded 5 sacks, forced 4 turnovers, and 11 different Foresters had a tackle for loss. Ten of IC's 14 drives resulted in gains of less than 10 yards, including 6 drives resulting in negative yardage. The Blueboys were held 238 yards under their MWC season average for total offense and were limited to just 2.4 yards per play.
On an afternoon when several Foresters stood out on defense, sophomore Tim Pentz (West Dundee, IL/Dundee Crown H.S.) may have been shown the brightest. He had two interceptions and a 60-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown for the first score of the game. He also recorded 4 tackles and had a pass break-up. Other defensive standouts included Bernie Perconti (Louisville, KY/Kentucky Country Day H.S.) (13 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 interception), Jay Biondo (Barrington, IL/Barrington H.S.) (8 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks), Andy O'Hara (South Bend, IN/Riley H.S.) (8 tackles, 2 tackles for loss), and Dustin Cassady (Morton, IL/Morton H.S.) (4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack, 2 pass break-ups).
The Forester offense, playing without regular starting quarterback Tom Dranger (Sauk Village, IL/Marian Catholic H.S.) who missed his first start in 16 games because of an injury, relied on their running game for the majority of their offense. Lake Forest racked up 271 yards rushing, led by freshman Jim Smith's (Chicago, IL/Mount Carmel H.S.) 110 yards on 18 carries. Tyrome Bembry (Hamilton, OH/Culver Academy) added 70 yards and quarterback Josh Nobilio (McHenry, IL/Marian Central Catholic H.S.), in his first start of the season, ran for 68 yards. He also threw for 52 yards, completing 4 of 8 passes with 1 interception.
After Pentz's fumble recovery opened the scoring, IC drove 80 yards down the field to tie the game at 7-7 with 11:09 remaining in the second quarter. The Forester offense then scored the game's next and final 20 points to secure the 27-7 victory. Nobilo capped an 8-play, 67-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to give the Foresters the lead. Smith scored on a 40-yard run in the third quarter and sophomore kicker Pat Dunne (Chicago, IL/Marist H.S.) chipped in two field goals (34 yards and 33 yards) in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring. Dunne also connected on all three of his PAT attempts, stretching his consecutive PAT streak to 20.
Lake Forest upped their record to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the MWC. The Foresters will take on league-leading St. Norbert (6-1, 6-0) this Saturday in DePere, WI.
