as Foresters Fall to Calvin College
Saturday was a very good day for four Forester women. Emily Woods (Signal Mountain, TN/Girls Prep), Randi Estes (LaBelle, FL/Riverdale), Erin Motzer (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) and Erin Poynter (Fort Collins, CO/Ft. Collins) combined to win seven of the first nine races of the day. They started off by winning the 200-yard medley relay in a season-best time of 1:58.49. In their six individual wins and two other top-four finishes, they added seven more season-best times. Woods had one of the best days of her young collegiate career, recording the Foresters' fastest times of the season in her wins in the 100 butterfly (1:01.09) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.84). Estes also won two races in addition to the relay, the 200- (2:00.29) and 500-yard (5:22.91) freestyles. Motzer won the 1000 freestyle (11:29.83) and was second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.61), while Poynter was victorious in the 200 individual medley (2:20.78) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.57). Those times place Poynter atop the Lake Forest lists of 2001-02 top times. Finally, Ellen Lillegard earned a third-place finish in the 1000 freestyle by swimming her best race of the season (12:13.11). Junior Eric Boarini (Wadsworth, IL/Carmel) was the lone winner for the Lake Forest men. He won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.66, his first sub-50 second performance of the year, and placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:51.57) and as part of the 200 freestyle relay team (1:34.47). Sophomore Brady Lowdermilk (Parker, CO/Regis) was also on that relay squad and added a runner-up finish in the 200 backstroke (2:05.38). Junior co-captain Anthony Laurino (Wichita, KS/Wichita East) had an excellent day as well, cutting 11 seconds and 6 seconds off his previous season bests to finish third in the 1000- (10:57.19) and 500-yard (5:16.66) freestyle events, respectively. The Foresters will spend the next
two weeks preparing for the Midwest Conference Championship Meet, which
takes place February 15-17 at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.
The men's team will defend their 2000-01 conference championship and the
women will strive to improve on their runner-up finish of a year ago.
