Lake Forest Swimming and Diving Teams Place 4th at Hope Quad
Motzer and Lawlor perform well in butterfly

Erin Motzer (top) and Aaron Lawlor (bottom) recorded season-best times in the butterfly.
HOLLAND, MI - If it's true that in order to be the best a team must compete against the best, the Lake Forest College swimming and diving teams are on the right track. All three of the men's opponents in the Hope College quad meet finished in the top ten in the 2001 NCAA Championship Meet, while two of the women's foes placed in the top 15 (Wheaton and Hope). On Saturday the Forester women scored 279 points to finish behind Wheaton, Hope and Kalamazoo in that order. The men totaled 176 points and were fourth behind Kalamazoo, Hope and Wheaton.

In leading the women's team, junior Erin Motzer (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) scored 34.5 points and had her best swim of the year in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing fourth in 2:16.86. She also placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.16) and anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay team to a sixth-place finish. Senior Randi Estes (LaBelle, FL/Riverdale) contributed 36 points by stroking her way to fourth place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.57) and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.02). She earned her first points of the day by swimming the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay, leading her team to a fifth-place finish (4:25.72).

Rounding out the list of leading point scorers for Lake Forest were juniors Dana Tate (Appleton, WI/East) and Erin Poynter (Fort Collins, CO/Ft. Collins) with 31 and 29 points, respectively. Tate was third in the 3-meter diving competition (182.35 points) and fourth in the 1-meter (162.85). Poynter placed fifth (400-yard medley relay), sixth (200-yard breaststroke) and ninth (200-yard individual medley) in her three races.

The best performances for the men's team came from sophomores Aaron Lawlor (Vernon Hills, IL/Libertyville) and Brandon Johnson (Phoenix, AZ/Brophy). Lawlor's time of 2:06.54 was good enough for fourth place in the 200-yard butterfly and was his and the Foresters' best time of the season. Johnson was the leading point scorer for the men, totaling 36.5 points on the strength of two individual top fives and a sixth-place finish as a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team. He finished fourth in both the 500-yard (5:03.29) and 1000-yard (10:28.31) freestyle events.

The 400-yard medley relay team of Lawlor, Brady Lowdermilk (Parker, CO/Regis), Joe Isaacs (Shorewood, MN/Breck), and Eric Boarini (Wadsworth, IL/Carmel) placed fifth and set a new Lake Forest standard for the season with a time of 3:48.46. Lowdermilk also finished fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.06), while Boarini was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.71). Isaacs added tenth-place finishes in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles to become the final Forester to score more than 20 points.

The Foresters will take to the pool again Saturday, January 26, when they host their final home meet of the season. They will celebrate Parents' Day, Senior Day and Alumni Day while taking on the Illinois Institute of Technology beginning at 11:00 a.m.
