Foresters Finish Second at MWC Championship Tournament
Team defeats Beloit and Ripon, falls to St. Norbert

JACKSONVILLE, IL - The Lake Forest College volleyball team placed second in the 10-team Midwest Conference Championship Tournament over the weekend (November 5-6) at Illinois College. On Friday the Foresters defeated Beloit College in five games (30-16, 38-40, 30-22, 29-31, 15-9) to reach Saturday’s semifinals, where they eliminated Ripon College in four (30-28, 16-30, 30-28, 30-22). St. Norbert knocked off Lake Forest, the tourney’s number four seed, in three games (30-24, 30-19, 30-19) in the championship match. The Foresters finish the season with a 20-13 record.

Seniors Amy Krueger (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) and DeAnna Bauer (Naperville, IL/Naperville North) led the Foresters with 19 and 17 kills, respectively, against Beloit. Krueger also had 20 digs while Bauer added a match-high four aces. Sophomore Janelle Balcerzak (Milwaukee, WI/Pius XI) recorded a match-high six blocks, ranked third on the team with 16 kills and, with two aces in the match, broke the previous single-season school record of 65. Junior Meghan Miller (Williams Bay, WI/Williams Bay) had three aces and led the squad with 26 digs and senior Andrea Krueger (Tinley Park, IL/Andrew) tallied 59 assists. Freshman Merissa Martin (Vernon Hills, IL/Vernon Hills) also reached double figures in digs with 14.

The program’s single-season record of 1,294 assists fell in the semifinal triumph over Ripon, the tournament’s top seed. Andrea Krueger recorded 45 and finished the contest with 1,302 on the year. Amy Krueger paced the squad with 16 kills and added 19 digs. Sophomore Savanna Shumaker (Bristol, WI/Westosha Central) was next with 13 kills and also reached double figures with 11 digs. Balcerzak had 10 kills and three blocks. Miller led the team with 26 digs and Bauer chipped in a dozen.

With 12, Balcerzak was the only Forester to reach double figures in kills in the championship match. Miller led the team with 14 digs and Andrea Krueger had 26 assists.

The 2004 Foresters rank among the top three teams in school history in aces, kills, digs, blocks, and assists. Individual single-season school records include Balcerzak’s 67 aces, Andrea Krueger’s 1,328 assists, Miller’s 668 digs, and 60 solo blocks by freshman Nicole Baich’s (Westchester, IL/Nazareth Academy), despite her missing the final few weeks of the year due to illness.

Miller also set a new school record with 1,465 career digs, just 31 more than second-place Amy Krueger. Andrea Krueger finished her career second in team history with 3,373 assists and third with 196 aces.
