Lake Forest Splits Four Matches, Places Fourth at Hornet Invitational
Baich makes all-tournament team, becomes Foresters' all-time leader in blocks

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Forester volleyball team began the 2007 by splitting its four matches at Kalamazoo College’s Hornet Invitational over the weekend (August 31-September 1) and placing fourth in the eight-team event. Lake Forest fell 30-25, 30-26, 32-34, 32-30 to Franklin College before defeating Purdue University North Central 30-25, 30-17, 30-25 on Friday. The Foresters won 30-28, 30-20, 23-30, 30-28 against Albion College Saturday morning to reach that afternoon’s third-place match, where they fell 32-30, 30-19, 30-24 to Huntington University.

Senior Nicole Baich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) led Lake Forest with a dozen kills against Franklin and senior Merissa Martin (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) and junior Ashley Cretacci (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) each added 11. Junior Ashleigh Martinez (Chula Vista, Calif./Hilltop) led the setters with 25 assists and Martin and junior Lisa Sturgill (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan South) tied for team-high honors with 18 digs. Baich recorded eight blocks, including five solos, and freshman Mandi Mulliner (Elmhurst, Ill./York) had five.

Baich registered a team-high eight kills and four blocks against Purdue North Central. Martinez and freshman Deena Blanchard (Sparta, Mich./Sparta) each recorded nine assists, Blanchard and senior Lorraine Scanlon (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) had three aces apiece, and Sturgill tallied 16 digs.

Martinez recorded a career-high 35 assists against Albion. Baich and Martin led the team with 14 and 11 kills, respectively, and Martin added four aces and 14 digs. Sturgill had 22 digs and sophomore Regina Cyvas (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) led the squad with nine blocks while Baich and Mulliner combined for nine more.

Baich was once again the team leader in kills against Huntington with 10. She also had three blocks to become the Foresters’ all-time leader in that category with 394 in her career. Martinez tallied 28 assists and Sturgill and sophomore Megan Fasules (Little Rock, Ark./Pulaski Academy) recorded 15 and 14 digs, respectively.

After finishing the weekend with 44 kills and 20 blocks, Baich was named to the all-tournament team.

The Foresters’ next contest will be their home opener against Wheaton College Tuesday (September 4) night at 7:00. The team will also host Elmhurst College at the same time on Thursday (September 6).
