LAKE FOREST WINS FIRST TWO CONFERENCE GAMES, SITS ATOP MWC
Two wins to start the Midwest Conference season have propelled Lake Forest to a familiar spot - first place in the MWC. The Foresters, this year's pre-season favorites to win the league, finished the 1998-99 regular season in first place. LF used an 83-71 win over Monmouth on Tuesday (Dec. 1) and a 78-50 victory over Illinois College on Saturday (Dec. 4) to take the early lead in the 1999-2000 MWC race.
Versus Monmouth, six Foresters scored at least 8 points, led by junior Alison Grubbs's (Cullom,  IL/Tri Point High School) 16 points. Grubbs also had a team-high 6 assists. Junior Karla Gribble (Mineral Point, WI/Mineral Point H.S.) added 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting and Kim Magee (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego H.S.) scored 11 points and freshman Katie McCants (Menasha, WI/Menasha H.S.) chipped in 10 points with her 5 of 8 shooting performance. Senior Addi Murphy (Chillicothe, IL/Illinois Valley Central H.S.) led the team with 12 rebounds and the Foresters out-rebounded the Scots 47-30.
In a rematch of last season's MWC Championship Tournament semifinal, in which Illinois College defeated Lake Forest 66-65, the Foresters avenged last year's season-ending loss with a decisive 78-50 win on Saturday. LF outscored IC by 14 points in each half - 36-22 in the first half and 42-28 in the second half. Grubbs led the team with 17 points and McCants tallied 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting. The Foresters forced IC into 30 turnovers, 18 of which came via Lake Forest steals. Ten different Foresters had at least one steal, led by Grubbs with 5 and senior Melissa Schneider (Arlington Heights, IL/John Hersey H.S.) with 4 take-aways.
