Artifact Analysis:
I am holding in my hands my great-great-grandfather's Civil War discharge papers who was "mustered out" of the Union ARmy in Nashville, Tennessee in July, 1865. The document explains that he was born in Germany in 1835 and hailed as a dairy farmer from the nearby town of Neptune, Wisconsin (Richland County). It also describes his height, weight, eye and hair color and that he served during the last 6 months of the Civil War. I am also holding a picture of a 50-year Civil War Reunion (26th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment) taken in a Milwaukee County Park in 1912 in which my great-great-grandfather is pictured (but not identified) and would be the age of 79 years.
