Rick Holtz - Short Essay A

I am the right person to be teaching U.S. history because 1) I have an intense love for the United States and its past and 2) I have had a life-long desire to share my enthusiastic learning about it with young people. I want young learners to experience the fun of studying American History by providing them with opportunities to look at American History in a singular way (not to generically examine history as a text's publishers colelctive body of facts, events and people) designing/teaching mroe "hands-on" creative learning strategies in utilizing actual artifacts/documents provided by websites, museums and otehr resource centers which will do well to make history come alive for students of varying abilities. I also want students to make real connections with their own historical pasts as I ahve done with my grandfather on my mother's side and my great-great grandfather on my father's side. I believe students can develop a love, deep interest and understanding to "reconstruct" their own visions/versions of America's historical personalities, events and periods as well as make those personal connections to their own family histories illustrating how their families helped to weave America's story. Finally, I want students not to glorify the American past but understand that Americans centuries ago learned by making mistakes, had faults, dreams, needs and desires whihc fed their feelings and emotional responses and were directly related to their family values as well as their geographic and cultural environments. students will be able to realize that the issues of their ancestors to find happiness/success in America were as important to them as they are to America's newest citizens.
