Vita for R. Scott Schappe

Educational Background

Ph.D., University of Wisconsin--Madison, December 1992

B.S., University of Michigan--Ann Arbor, December 1984

Employment Record

Assistant Professor of Physics, Lake Forest College, 9/96-present

Assistant Professor of Physics, University of South Alabama, 9/95-8/96

Research Associate, University of Wisconsin--Madison, 1/93-8/95

Research Assistant, University of Wisconsin--Madison, 9/85-12/92

Research Interests

The primary focus of my research is collisions of electrons with atoms and molecules. I often use the optical method to measure absolute cross sections for the excitation into particular states. I have recently made preliminary measurements of excitation cross sections for several transitions in nitric oxide.

I have also used a magneto-optical trap to cool and trap Rb atoms to create a target for an electron beam. This technique has allowed me to measure absolute total electron scattering cross sections and total ionization cross sections.

Other Interests

  • Windsurfing
  • Sailboat racing (big boats and dinghies)
