Electron-atom collisions play an important role in the following:

  • HeNe Laser
  • Semiconductor processing plasma
  • Fluorescent lamps
  • Neon signs

Electron-atom collisions are important in understadning natural phenomena:

  • Primordial (Bing Bang) helium abundance
  • Planetrary nebula
  • Upper atmosphere dynamics

Why Nitric Oxide?

  • The Atmosphere:
  • Cataclyst of ozone destruction
  • Component of smog in upper atmosphere
  • Aurol emission
  • Planetary atmospheres (such as Venus)
  • Interstellar space
  • Bilogical systems
  • Help desaign smog abatement devices

The Experiment

The idea behind the experiment is to measure the cross sections of molecules for certain excitations.

This meaurement must be made indirectly.  The experiment makes this measurement in the following way:

  1. Electrons are fired into a chamber of NO.
  2. Some electrons hit molecules of no exciting them.
  3. The excited molecules emit light as they drop down from the excited state (See fig. 3)
  4. The intensity of this light is detected.
  5. The intesity of the light detected is related to the size of the cross sections of the moleclues.

The larger the cross section, the more molecules were excited by the elcetron and the greater the intensity of light emitted (see fig. 4)
