FORESTERS HONORED AT FALL SPORTS BANQUET
At the Lake Forest College Fall Sports Banquet, Sarah Frantz (Lake Geneva, WI/Badger High School) and Angela Lagerman (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls H.S.) collected the Most Valuable and Most Improved Players, respectively, for the Forester volleyball program.
Frantz, a 5-6 junior setter, was a three-time MWC Player of the Week selection this fall. For the season, she collected 1,204 assists, the highest single season total in school history. She now has the first, third, and fourth highest single season totals at Lake Forest. Included in her 1999 season assists total were 121 assists in three matches at the MWC Tournament and 104 assists in two matches at the NCAA Tournament. Frantz, who became the school's all-time leader for career assists early this season, now has 3,167 assists for her career. She also holds school records for assists in a four-game match (65) and five-game match (74). She broke the four-match record this season versus Grinnell. Also this season, she moved into second place for career aces with 164, just 4 behind current leader Anna Panighetti (1994-97). Frantz had a team-high 66 aces this season, the highest single season total in school history. In the single season aces category, Frantz holds the first, fifth, and eighth slots. Her 239 digs this season boosted her career total to 591, sixth in the school record books.
Lagerman shook off a sluggish start to her season by working her way into the starting lineup and eventually appearing in 78 games. She pounded 140 kills and had a .305 hitting percentage. Lagerman led the team with 28 solo blocks and 83 total blocks.
Head Coach Beth Pier, the 1999 MWC Coach of the Year, also handed out All-Conference awards to First Teamers Frantz and sophomore Stephanie Reinboldt (McHenry, IL/Marian Central Catholic H.S.), and Second Team members Mary Gerke (Bend, OR/Mountain View H.S.) and Jessie Griffin (Beecher, IL/Marian Catholic H.S.). Gerke and Griffin are both seniors. Academic All-Conference honors were awarded to Amanda Taylor (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley H.S.), Ashley Moats (Stilwell, KS/Blue Valley H.S.), Jennifer Hooton (Bellaire, TX/Bellaire H.S.), Lagerman, and Reinboldt.
Forester Athlete of the Week awards were given to Frantz (twice) and Conference Player of the Week awards to Frantz (three times), Reinboldt, and Taylor.
In 1999, the Foresters won their second MWC Championship in the last three years and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the first time in school history. At the national tournament the Foresters defeated Calvin College, the 19th-ranked team in the nation, in the first round before falling to the 9th-ranked College of Mount St. Joseph in five games during the round of 32.
