Foresters out-gain the Buccaneers 418-136 in 23-0 victory

Dan Carter
Lake Forest, Ill. - The Forester football team pleased its Homecoming crowd with a 23-0 rout of Beloit College on Saturday (September 30). Lake Forest is now 1-4 overall this season and 1-3 in Midwest Conference play. The Buccaneers fell to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in the league.

The Foresters gave up just 136 total yards in the contest and gained 418. Junior quarterback Jeff Ziemnik (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) completed 18 of 29 passes for 278 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 33 yards. Freshman Sam Kotler (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley) led the Foresters with 53 yards rushing and classmate Dan Carter (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) caught three passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Tom Cirone (Chicago, Ill./Niles Notre Dame) had 62 receiving yards on a game-high five catches and senior Lee Fabiatos (Hamburg, N.Y./Nichols School) hauled in four passes for 72 yards.

Freshman Chad Zimborski (Waukesha, Wisc./Waukesha North) led the defense with 10 tackles, including five solos. Freshman Lorenzo Ramirez (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) recorded his second interception of the season during the first quarter and senior Keith Hanson (Fairfax, Va./Vermont Academy) picked off a pair of second half passes.

Ziemnik also helped out on special teams, by making two of three extra points, connecting on a 28-yard field goal, and booting his only punt of the game out of bounds inside the 20-yard line. Hanson had six punt returns for 36 yards and senior Justin Ellerman (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) averaged 41.8 yards on his four punts.

After forcing Beloit to punt on the first possession of the game, the Foresters scored on their third play from scrimmage, a 64-yard touchdown pass from Ziemnik to Carter.

The teams combined for five punts and a pair of interceptions during the game’s next seven possessions. The home team struck again on its second drive of the second quarter. The offense moved 37 yards in 10 plays and Ziemnik split the uprights from 28 yards out.

Lake Forest took advantage of a short field again two possessions later. Ziemnik completed a pair of passes to Cirone for 35 yards and senior Devin Furlong (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) pushed his way into the end zone from the 1-yard line.

The Foresters closed out the scoring on their final drive of the first half. Ziemnik completed a 13-yard pass to Cirone and a 49-yarder to Fabiatos to set up Carter’s 6-yard scoring reception with just two seconds left before intermission.

The Lake Forest defense forced three-and-outs on three of Beloit’s five second-half possessions and the other two ended with Hanson interceptions. While the Foresters did not score again, they did control the ball for nearly 17 of 30 minutes in the second half.

Six former Forester athletes were inducted in to the Lake Forest College Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday morning and were honored again at halftime of the game. Plaques were presented to basketball players Ann Gebhardt ’93 and Alan Shethar ’71, basketball and soccer player Anne Bennett Rhodus ’93, hockey player Daniel Vacco ’92, swimmer Tom Smith ’87, and volleyball and softball player Cindy Hahn Pederson ’86.

The Forester football team will travel to Lawrence University next Saturday (October 7). Kickoff under the lights is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
