Pictured artifact:
I am holding a Lithuanian Sash that is worn by males for special occasions, like birthdays, anniversaries, festivals. (This is a specific custom particular to Lithuania.) This sash is hand-woven by a folk-artist from Vilnius, Lithuania- the capital of the country. (My husband's paternal grandparents came from this area.) This particular sash is woven with yellow, red and green threads- the colors of the Lithuanian flag; the oak leaves that are on this sash are the ancient symbols of masculinity in Lithuania. Many Lithuanians immigrated to Waukegan, IL at the turn of the 20th century to work in the steel mills.
