Christine B. Morris - Short Essay B

A Classroom Success Story: Teaching U.S. History at Waukegan High School.

As a U.S. History teacher, I have always tried to help my students relate to the subject matter. One year, I began the study of U.S. History with Personal Histories. The assignment was lengthy and specific, but the premise was that everyone's history is interesting, so it is important to know who our ancestors were and how they lived.

One young man was very concerned because he had no contact with his father's side, but he knew that there was a great-grandmother still living in Alabama. He consulted his mother who encouraged him to contact this relative. The great-grandmother was most enthused to tell my student stories about her past, and that of the other relatives on dad's side. My student was so taken with this history that he went to Alabama for Christmas break. He came back with a picture of great-grandmama with Cab Callaway and a new appreciation for the study of history!

This student has since graduated and gone on to college - his major: History!!!!!
